24 Mar 2018

Taking a major step towards PM Modi's vision of "Digiyatra", air travels in India may soon become paperless, allowing passengers to use their biometric identity.

Global air transport and IT giant SITA plans to use Aadhaar's biometric identity system and its Smart Path technology to facilitate a smooth transition across all airlines and domestic/international airports in India.

Read on for more.

How would it work?
The plan

SITA aims to leverage Aadhaar to create one of the most efficient travel system worldwide, giving people travelling across India a paperless, hassle-free experience.

It would link the databases of airports, airlines and other involved parties with the national biometric identification cards of Indians and foreign passports, enhancing traveler security and convenience, reported IANS.

Baggage handling operations to also get smoother, more efficient
Other improvements

SITA will also help introduce its baggage tracking solution 'BagManager' at 15 Indian airports to help improve their baggage handling operations.

Soon passengers using airports in 13 cities including Calicut, Mangalore, Tirupati, Madurai, Lucknow and Jaipur will get real-time information on their baggage's status, considerably reducing the chances of its mishandling.

However, it remains to be seen how soon it would get implemented.
