Pakistan- PHC orders protection to Ghag victim from Bajaur

(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) PESHAWAR, 19 December: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has ordered protection and financial assistance to a victim of Ghag tradition belonging to FATA.

A two-member bench of the PHC comprising Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim and Justice Ikramullah Khan gave these orders on a petition filed by Amna, a girl hailing from FATA and currently living in Swabi. The court was told that the father of Amna is an employee of Auditor General's office and they are permanent residents of Bajaur. The court was told that when Amna was two years old, her cousin Iftikhar had made Ghag that Amna will not be given in marriage to any other person. It was further revealed that Amna is adult now and she is not willing to enter marriage with Iftikhar. The petitioner said there is no law about Ghag in FATA which is a grave violation of human rights.

Iftikhar's lawyer opined that there is no law about Ghag in FATA, therefore, the petition should be dismissed.

The court said in its orders that although such law is not available for FATA, but it is a grave violation of human rights. The court asked the affected girl to approach the concerned police station for action against Iftikhar.

Under the tradition of Ghag, a person makes an announcement that he will marry a certain girl, and anyone other than him trying to marry the same girl is considered an enemy.
