RasGas Company Limited (RasGas) recorded a second helium delivery milestone after delivering its 5,000th cargo from its Helium-2 plant. Last year, RasGas marked its 5000th milestone delivery for the Helium-1 plant.
The achievement reinforces Qatar's position as the world's leading helium producers and exporters, and RasGas' positioning as the operator of Ras Laffan Industrial City's successful production, storage, loading and sales facilities of helium - a non-hydrocarbon, non-renewable resource.
Helium-2 became the world's largest helium purification and liquefaction unit upon start-up in July 2013 and reached 100 percent annual production capacity of 1,570 million standard cubic feet (MMcf), less than a year later.
'RasGas is pleased to mark its second milestone with helium delivery of 5000th cargo from Helium 2 plant, highlighting Qatar's unique flexible production capabilities, and asserting the country's global positioning as prime helium producers and exporters. Helium-2 production currently stands at more than 1,400 cargoes per year, said Ali Khalaf Al Kaabi, RasGas' Interim Chief Marketing and Shipping Officer.
According to the report lsquo;Mineral Commodity Summaries', by the US Geological Survey (January 2017), Qatar is meeting approximately 32 percent of the current global helium demand. RasGas also ranked first on the list of lsquo;top manufacturers in the global market' in a recent market study on lsquo;Global Helium Market 2017'.
The Helium 2 plant incorporates highly complex and advanced technology that captures, extracts and refines crude helium from six liquefied natural gas (LNG) mega trains: RasGas' trains 6 and 7, and Qatargas' trains 4, 5, 6 and 7.
Helium adds value with multiple uses across medical, scientific and communications; such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); fiber optics and semiconductor manufacturing; metallurgy; breathing atmospheres for deep diving or unique blood gas medical mixtures; lifting for high altitude scientific research balloons, blimps; and other advanced applications.
