Trump’s Middle East envoy scheduled to meet in Jerusalem with Netanyahu

(MENAFN) Steve Vetkov, US President Trump’s Middle East envoy, is scheduled to meet today in Jerusalem with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz. The discussions aim to prepare the ground for negotiations between Israel and Hamas on the second phase of the ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages. The Prime Minister's Office announced that Netanyahu will meet with President trump at the White House on February 4. Parallel talks are expected to begin soon. The second phase of the ceasefire is marked by significant uncertainty. While there are efforts to bridge gaps, the plan has faced obstacles, particularly over Israel's demand that Hamas not gain any governmental authority in Gaza. Foreign sources believe that international pressure on Netanyahu may lead to difficult political decisions, including the possible withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, which could threaten the stability of his government.

Qatar has continued to facilitate the process, with Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majd al-Ansari stating that no significant issues have arisen regarding the first phase of the ceasefire agreement, despite some complaints from both sides. Meanwhile, Israeli political figures, including Shas and Torah Judaism leaders, have shown support for the second phase, though some ministers from the Religious Zionist Party are expected to withdraw, potentially forcing Netanyahu to rely on opposition support. Concerns remain regarding the commitment of both parties to fulfill the terms of the agreement, with delays in prisoner releases and humanitarian efforts, as well as setbacks in the implementation of the first phase. Diplomatic sources worry that sabotage efforts could increase in the second phase. Netanyahu's past comments about making partial deals have raised further concerns among mediating countries. It remains unclear whether high-level talks will be held in Doha, Cairo, or Europe to advance the negotiations.
