Railway workers strike, disrupting travel across Bangladesh

(MENAFN) Train services across Bangladesh were suspended on Tuesday as railway workers went on strike demanding higher pensions and better benefits. This action disrupted travel for tens of thousands of passengers and halted freight transport across the country. The strike came after the workers failed to reach an agreement with the interim government, led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, following a meeting late on Monday. The workers' union has warned that the strike will continue indefinitely unless their demands are met by the government.

Saidur Rahman, the acting president of the Bangladesh Railway Running Staff and Workers Union, confirmed that the workers would remain on strike until a satisfactory resolution is reached. The strike has caused significant disruption to the state-run railway system, which plays a vital role in the transportation of people and goods across the nation. The railway system serves approximately 65 million passengers annually in a country of 170 million people, relying on around 25,000 employees and an extensive network of more than 36,000 kilometers of track.

At the Kamlapur Railway Station in Dhaka, the situation became chaotic as hundreds of passengers, unaware of the strike, found themselves stranded. Many travelers waited for hours, hoping for train services to resume, but were ultimately forced to return home disappointed.

The strike has prompted frustration among passengers, with several voicing their grievances as the country’s railway adviser visited the station. Despite the adviser’s presence, the complaints from the stranded passengers highlighted the inconvenience caused by the ongoing strike.
