Israel strikes Syria, Assad falls: new chapter in conflict

(MENAFN) A war monitoring group reported on Tuesday that Israel has launched 300 airstrikes on Syria since President Bashar al-Assad's downfall, noting that the attacks had "destroyed the most important military sites" within the country.

Assad fled Syria as an alliance of Islamist-led rebels advanced into the capital, Damascus, ending more than fifty years of harsh rule by his family on Sunday.

Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, the Islamist leader who spearheaded the campaign that drove Assad from power, has initiated discussions on a transfer of authority and promised to hold accountable former high-ranking officials responsible for torture and war crimes.

His group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which has ties to Syria's Al-Qaeda branch, is designated as a terrorist group by many Western nations, though it has attempted to soften its public messaging.

The collapse of Assad's regime, characterized by a brutal crackdown on opposition and a network of prisons used to silence dissent, ignited celebrations both within Syria and among its global diaspora.
