UN head denounces persistent gang violence, loss of life in Haiti

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the ongoing gang violence and loss of life in Haiti, calling for a thorough investigation into recent atrocities. According to a statement from his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, an armed gang killed at least 184 people, including 127 elderly men and women, between December 6 and 8 in the Cite Soleil area of Port-au-Prince. Guterres expressed deep sympathy and condolences to the victims' families and strongly condemned the violence.

The UN chief urged Haitian authorities to carry out a comprehensive investigation to hold the perpetrators accountable for these heinous crimes, along with all other human rights violations taking place in the country. He emphasized the importance of justice for the victims and their families.

Guterres also reiterated his call for member states to provide the necessary financial and logistical support to the Multinational Security Support mission. This support is crucial for assisting the Haitian National Police in combating the escalating gang violence that continues to destabilize the country.

Finally, the UN Secretary-General called on all Haitian stakeholders to accelerate the political transition process. He stressed that lasting stability in Haiti depends on political progress and effective cooperation among various political entities within the country.
