Istanbul Consulate elevates Syria's new flag

(MENAFN) Syria's new flag was elevated above the nation’s consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul on Monday morning, just one day after the fall of the decades-old Baath Regime in Damascus, marking a historic turning point for the country.

On Sunday, the consulate staff removed the flag of the Bashar al-Assad regime from the terrace and replaced it with the new flag, symbolizing the dawn of a new era. The new flag was raised early on Monday, witnessed by a small gathering of Syrian nationals who expressed hope for a brighter future.

After a brief moment of relative calm, fighting between Assad regime forces and anti-regime groups reignited on November 27 in rural areas west of Aleppo, a key city in northern Syria.

Over the course of just 10 days, opposition forces launched a rapid offensive, capturing major towns and ultimately seizing the capital, Damascus, on Sunday. The swift developments, bolstered by defecting military units, led to the collapse of the Assad regime after nearly 13 years of brutal civil conflict.
