Asteroid hits Russia

(MENAFN) A one-meter-long asteroid is set to enter Earth's atmosphere over Yakutia, Russia, on Tuesday at around 7:00 p.m. Moscow time, scientists have reported. The event is expected to produce a bright flash visible from up to 700 km away.

The asteroid is predicted to enter the atmosphere between the Olekminsky settlement and the city of Lensk in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia). Researchers from the Ural Federal University are closely monitoring its path.

Though the asteroid is small and poses no threat to Earth, its entry will offer a rare visual spectacle. Similar events, such as the 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor, have previously been seen, though those incidents caused damage and injuries due to the shockwave from the explosion.

Residents in the observation zone are encouraged to look out for the flash, but authorities assure that no damage or safety risks are anticipated.
