BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 13. A special event
on "African Civil Society Organizations' Expectations from COP29:
Call for Ambitious New Collective Quantitative Targets" was held as
part of COP29 in Baku, Trend reports.
The event emphasized COP29's significant potential to drive
global climate action, particularly in key areas such as financing
mechanisms and meeting the needs of the most vulnerable
communities.
Representatives from African civil society organizations
expressed their expectation that the international community will
fulfill its promises and set more ambitious and equitable climate
financing goals.
They highlighted that the establishment of a new collective
quantitative goal (NCQG) for climate financing should align with
Africa's adaptation ambitions, which are currently being discussed
at negotiations for the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA).
The spirit of the Paris Agreement and the imperatives of climate
justice must serve as the foundation for the new NCQG, the
participants stressed.
The Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) reiterated its
call for developed nations to honor their commitments under the
Paris Agreement, deliver a new collective quantitative goal in
Baku, and ensure a sustainable flow of climate finance to address
the climate crisis.
The event also aimed to demonstrate solidarity at COP29 and
foster a better understanding of the key issues affecting the
African context, encouraging Azerbaijani NGOs and media to engage
with these challenges. The goal is to advocate for climate justice
and global equality in climate finance.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN
Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will run
until November 22, opened today at the Baku Olympic Stadium. The
event is the largest organized by Azerbaijan to date and is the
first time the region has hosted the event in Azerbaijan.
The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and
ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate
finance.
The COP29 chairmanship has launched 14 initiatives that include
linkages between climate action and the Sustainable Development
Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy storage,
harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction
in organic waste, action on green digital technologies, and other
topics.
