New Delhi takes sever measures on coaching centers after student deaths

(MENAFN) In response to a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of three students, New Delhi authorities are intensifying their crackdown on coaching centers across the city. The disaster unfolded over the weekend when heavy rains caused severe flooding in a basement of a civil service coaching center, leading to the deaths of Shreya Yadav, 22, Nivin Dalwin, 23, and Tanya Soni, 21.

On Saturday, the basement of the coaching center, which was initially intended for parking and storage, was converted into a library, violating regulatory standards. As the heavy rain inundated the area, water quickly accumulated in the basement where 18 students were present. Despite the efforts of rescue teams, the high volume of water, coupled with traffic delays, made it impossible to save the three students trapped inside.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has since initiated a rigorous response to prevent further tragedies. A high-level committee will be established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the flooding, while immediate action has been taken against illegal coaching centers. Officials visited Old Rajinder Nagar, known for its concentration of civil service coaching institutions, and shut down around 13 centers operating with illegal basement modifications.

The crackdown followed significant public outcry and protests from students demanding accountability and reform. In conjunction with the operational enforcement, five individuals, including four co-owners of the affected coaching center, have been arrested and are currently in judicial custody. These arrests underscore the severity of the authorities' commitment to addressing the regulatory breaches and ensuring the safety of educational institutions in the capital.

The tragic loss of the three students has galvanized local officials and the community to address the broader issue of compliance among coaching centers, aiming to prevent such incidents from recurring and ensuring that student safety is prioritized.
