Previous Russian deputy Premier observes shift in geopolitical climate surrounding Ukraine war

(MENAFN) Alfred Koch, a former Russian deputy prime Minister who served under Boris Yeltsin and now resides in Germany, has observed a shift in the geopolitical climate surrounding the Ukraine conflict. In a recent Telegram post, Koch highlighted a growing sense of potential resolution, despite ongoing challenges on the battlefield.

Koch noted that the current environment is filled with various peace proposals, from the pragmatic Orban plan to more speculative ones like the Erdogan plan. This proliferation of diplomatic efforts suggests an increasing likelihood of a peaceful resolution, he suggested. In contrast, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen remains one of the few Western leaders fervently advocating for continued military support to Ukraine. However, Koch pointed out that von der Leyen's position lacks tangible impact, as she does not control military resources.

The former deputy prime minister criticized the lack of decisive action from other European leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. According to Koch, the reluctance of major European Union states to significantly increase military aid to Ukraine has led to a static situation on the frontlines. This apparent stalemate has, in Koch's view, been recognized by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is grappling with the limitations of his own diplomatic efforts.

Koch expressed skepticism about Zelensky's strategy, particularly regarding the planned second peace summit. He questioned what leverage Zelensky possesses to compel Russia's participation and noted that the previous summit had little tangible impact. Despite Zelensky’s attempts to portray progress, Koch suggested that the situation remains largely unchanged and that the international community’s indecision could be influencing the conflict’s trajectory.

Overall, Koch's commentary underscores a complex interplay between diplomatic efforts and military realities, with a notable shift toward seeking resolution as Western support dynamics evolve.
