Slumbering in historic churches becomes exceptional travel thing

(MENAFN) Travelers exploring the United Kingdom this summer are discovering a novel alternative to traditional accommodations like hotels and tents: spending a night in historic churches. This emerging trend, known as champing—a portmanteau of "church" and "camping"—offers adventurous souls a chance to experience a blend of history, spirituality, and unconventional lodging.

Charlie Hill, an author from Birmingham, recently embraced this trend during his holiday at St Cuthbert's Church in Holme Lacy, a quaint village nestled in Herefordshire, England. Dating back to the 13th century and situated by the serene banks of the River Wye, the church provided Hill with a unique setting for his overnight stay.

His champing experience included exploring the adjacent graveyard on a peaceful summer evening and enjoying a meal at the local village pub before retiring within the historic walls of the church. For Hill, the experience was not only adventurous but also thought-provoking, as he contemplated the church's dual role as both a sacred space and a recreational venue.

"We encountered some locals who were curious about our presence and intrigued by the idea of their church being used for overnight stays," Hill shared with The National. "Sitting amidst camping chairs surrounded by gravestones prompted us to ponder deeper themes, such as the enduring nature of grief."

Champing represents a growing trend where travelers seek immersive and meaningful experiences that connect them with history and community in unconventional ways. These overnight stays not only offer a glimpse into the architectural and cultural heritage of churches but also foster introspection and conversation about the evolving roles of sacred spaces in modern society.

As more travelers discover the allure of champing, historic churches across the UK are opening their doors to provide memorable and contemplative stays, blending adventure with cultural exploration in settings rich with centuries of history.
