China's Wuhan To Host Ministerial Meeting On COP29 By Week's End - Chief Executive Officer

(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) SHUSHA, Azerbaijan, July 22. China's Wuhan will host a ministerial meeting on COP29 by the end of the week, which will follow the 8th Ministerial Meeting on Climate Action (MoCA) initiated by China, the EU, and Canada, Chief Executive Officer of COP29, Elnur Soltanov, said at a panel discussion on "Solidarity for a Green World - COP29" in Shusha, Trend reports.

According to him, the ministerial meeting on COP29 in Wuhan will be followed by a meeting of experts in Shamakhi at the end of the month.

“This is a very important event. It will start in China and continue at the expert level already in Shamakhi. Then, an international meeting on COP29 is planned for September, followed by a meeting of the preparatory committee for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change,” Soltanov said.

He noted that all negotiations within COP29 are going successfully, and Azerbaijan expects to keep this accelerated pace.

Chief Executive Officer of COP29 recalled that during the climate summit in Baku on November 11–22, the following will be discussed: climate finance and its new models, the Paris Climate Agreement Article 6, the work of the current loss and damage fund, and several transition programs (from fossil fuels to low-carbon).

“We must target zero emissions by 2050 to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. Nowadays, the world consumes 97 million barrels of oil per day, but this is planned to be reduced to 25–30 million barrels per day by 2050. Gas consumption is planned to be reduced from the current 4 trillion cubic meters per year to 1 trillion cubic meters per year by 2050, and coal consumption from 8 billion tons per year to 1 billion tons per year. This will make it possible to achieve NetZero,” Soltanov added.

To note, the oil, gas, and coal production and export sectors produce the largest emissions into the atmosphere, which provoke global warming and climate cataclysms.
