Silk Way Rally officially launches in Russia

(MENAFN) The international Silk Way Rally officially launched in Russia on Friday, drawing competitors from 13 countries to partake in one of the globe's most demanding and picturesque racing events. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the rally, with the grand opening ceremony held in the Siberian city of Tomsk.

This edition of the rally is notable for its particularly challenging and thrilling route, which navigates a variety of landscapes, including the dense taiga, rugged mountain passes, icy permafrost, and intense desert terrains. The total race distance exceeds 5,200 kilometers (over 3,200 miles), with nearly 3,000 kilometers designated as high-speed sections.

A robust lineup of 106 teams from 13 nations has registered to compete in the event, which encompasses various vehicle categories including off-road vehicles, trucks, motorcycles, and quad bikes. Specifically, more than 100 drivers will compete in the SUV and truck divisions, representing countries such as Russia, Belarus, China, Mongolia, and Turkmenistan.

In addition to the main rally, this year's competition will host the second and third stages of the Russian Cross-Country Rally Championships, sanctioned by the International Motorcycling Federation, scheduled to take place from July 2 to July 9.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed confidence in the rally's significance, stating, “I have no doubt that the 2024 Silk Way Rally will become a major event in the global sports calendar and will promote international humanitarian cooperation while strengthening business and personal contacts.” His message to the participants and guests was published on the Kremlin's official website, highlighting the event's importance on the international stage.
