UN head expresses concern over situation in Gaza, says nowhere is safe

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern on Monday regarding the dire situation in the Gaza Strip, stating that "nowhere is safe" within the besieged enclave. In a message shared on X, he described the intensity of the fighting and the level of devastation as both "incomprehensible and inexcusable," emphasizing that every location in Gaza has become a potential killing zone. Guterres called on the conflicting parties to demonstrate the Political courage and resolve necessary to reach a sustainable agreement to end the hostilities.

In a separate statement, Guterres' spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, reiterated the UN's urgent call for all parties involved to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law. He stressed the need to take continuous measures to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure. Dujarric informed reporters that the UN and its humanitarian partners are actively assisting families displaced from northern Gaza as they seek refuge in the southern regions.

Highlighting the critical situation, Dujarric pointed out that the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that with every new evacuation order, families in Gaza are confronted with harrowing decisions: whether to remain in areas of active conflict or to flee to overcrowded regions lacking essential services.

"There is no safe place in Gaza," he stated emphatically, adding that shelters, hospitals, and even designated humanitarian zones are not immune from danger. This stark assessment underscores the urgent need for immediate action to protect civilian lives and ensure access to humanitarian aid in the region.
