Media reports Germany secretly delivering enormous weapons packages to Ukraine

(MENAFN) The German government has reportedly provided a substantial arms package to Ukraine in a covert operation conducted between late June and early July, as revealed by the Bavarian daily Munchner Merkur. Describing the shipment as "huge," the report indicates that this delivery largely went unnoticed by the public and media.

The arms package included a total of 39 pieces of heavy military equipment sourced from Germany’s military reserves and defense manufacturers. Among the key components were ten additional Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks and 20 Marder infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), contributing to a total of 50 Leopard 1A5 tanks and 120 Marder IFVs delivered to Ukraine to date.

Additionally, the shipment encompassed various engineering and mine-clearing vehicles, underscoring Germany's commitment to bolstering Ukraine's military capabilities. The delivery also featured a substantial supply of munitions, including 55,000 rounds of 155mm artillery shells.

Looking ahead, government data indicates that Berlin intends to send 85 more Leopard 1A5 tanks to Ukraine as part of a joint initiative with Denmark, along with 20 more Marder IFVs. Despite plans to provide up to 80 Leopard tanks by the end of 2023, delays have occurred due to challenges in securing spare parts for these armored vehicles.

Kiev remains optimistic about receiving sufficient German tanks to establish a specialized brigade for offensive operations and has strategically withheld its remaining Western tanks for several months. This approach reflects Ukraine's ongoing efforts to enhance its military readiness in the face of continued conflict.
