Samsung stays focused on super premium segment amid Huawei’s rise in foldable phones

(MENAFN) Samsung Electronics is unfazed by Huawei Technologies’ ascent to the top of the global foldable smartphone market, choosing instead to concentrate on enhancing its hardware and artificial intelligence capabilities within the "super premium" segment. Patrick Chomet, the executive vice president and head of customer experience at Samsung, articulated this strategy during the company’s recent Unpacked event in Paris, where he emphasized the importance of quality over sheer sales volume.

Chomet conveyed a confident outlook regarding the foldable smartphone category, stating, “I’m not concerned at all. The foldables category is still growing; it’s an innovation category, and we think there is still a long way to go before the inflection point.” He underscored that while the market continues to evolve, Samsung’s focus remains on perfecting the user experience and improving the quality of its devices rather than getting caught up in competition based on sales numbers.

Acknowledging Huawei's rapid rise in the market, Chomet noted the company’s advantage stemming from its strong presence in China, which he described as a significant market for affordable mobile phones. He remarked, “[Huawei] is a fine company; China is a big market, and historically, China is the biggest market for affordable mobile phones. So, it’s very natural in such a huge market.” Despite this competitive landscape, Chomet reaffirmed Samsung's commitment to the super premium device category, indicating that the company will continue to pursue opportunities in China while focusing on delivering high-quality, innovative products that enhance the user experience. This strategic approach reflects Samsung's belief in the long-term potential of foldable technology and its dedication to leading the market through superior craftsmanship and cutting-edge features.
