Slovak Premier voices admiration for Orban`s Moscow trip

(MENAFN) Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, making his first public appearance since surviving an assassination attempt, has publicly praised Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for his recent diplomatic initiatives. Speaking at Devin Castle near Bratislava, Fico expressed admiration for Orban's unannounced visits to Kiev and Moscow to engage in peace talks regarding the Ukraine conflict, actions that have sparked controversy among European Union leaders.

During his 15-minute address, Fico emphasized the importance of ongoing peace efforts, asserting that there can never be enough initiatives aimed at resolving conflicts through dialogue. He received a standing ovation from the audience as he reflected on his own desire to join Orban on these diplomatic missions, if his health permitted.

Fico, still recovering from being shot four times in the assassination attempt on May 15, attributed the attack to radical elements opposed to Slovakia's foreign policy stance, particularly its decision not to supply weapons to Ukraine. He criticized attempts to downplay the political motivations behind the assault, stating that differing opinions are increasingly suppressed within the European Union.

The prime minister's comments highlight ongoing tensions within the European Union regarding foreign policy towards Ukraine and the broader implications of diplomatic engagements by member states. Fico's endorsement of Orban's actions underscores divergent viewpoints among European Union leaders on how best to approach international relations amidst geopolitical challenges and internal political pressures.
