Reports state that Musk drops case against OpenAI

(MENAFN) In a surprising turn of events, Elon Musk has decided to drop his legal case against OpenAI, a move that comes shortly after he publicly criticized the organization's collaboration with Apple, according to reports by Reuters. Musk's attorneys filed a request in the California state court to dismiss the lawsuit against the artificial intelligence (AI) research firm, refraining from providing a specific reason for their decision.

The Tesla and X (formerly Twitter) CEO initially filed the lawsuit against OpenAI in February, alleging that the organization, which he co-founded in 2015, had strayed from its original mission of developing AI for the betterment of humanity without pursuing profit. OpenAI's ChatGPT has garnered widespread recognition in the field of generative AI, notably supported by investments from Microsoft.

The withdrawal of Musk's case occurred just a day before the court was slated to hear OpenAI's motion to dismiss it. In response to Musk's lawsuit, OpenAI had characterized it as a fabricated attempt by the tech mogul to advance his personal interests in AI, as reported by Reuters based on court filings.

Recently, Musk established his own AI startup called xAI, which launched last year and has since secured significant funding amounting to USD6 billion. This financial backing aims to facilitate the introduction of xAI's initial products into the market. Among these offerings is Grok, a generative AI chatbot positioned as a competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT and currently accessible via the X platform.

Earlier this week, OpenAI made headlines in collaboration with Apple, announcing plans to integrate ChatGPT technology into Apple's Siri voice assistant. Musk swiftly criticized this partnership, cautioning that it could lead to what he described as an "unacceptable security violation."

The withdrawal of Musk's lawsuit marks a notable development in the ongoing dynamics within the AI industry, reflecting shifting alliances and competitive maneuvers among prominent figures and organizations involved in advancing artificial intelligence technologies.
