Deadly flooding, landslides ravage northern Vietnam amid heavy rainfall

(MENAFN) Northern Vietnam is reeling from the devastating impact of flooding and landslides, which have claimed the lives of at least three people and caused widespread destruction. State media reported on Monday that days of relentless heavy rain have inundated thousands of homes and triggered landslides in mountainous regions.
Images broadcasted on state media depict the grim aftermath of the natural disaster, with water cascading down steep roads in Ha Giang province, a picturesque destination known for its mountainous terrain and popular motorcycle tours. Vehicles are seen overturned and abandoned in floodwaters, while residents in Ha Giang city await rescue from rooftops.
The torrential rain, which began on Saturday, has led to the partial submergence of thousands of homes and extensive damage to infrastructure across the province. The Lo river, swollen by the heavy downpour, has caused widespread flooding and landslides, cutting off access to several communes along the border with China.
Tragically, three individuals lost their lives in the calamity, either swept away by floodwaters or buried under landslides, according to reports from state-run Voice of Vietnam. The situation has been compounded by severe flooding in other northern regions, including the port city of Hai Phong and Quang Ninh province, home to the iconic Ha Long Bay.
Vietnam, accustomed to facing harsh weather conditions during the rainy season from June to November, is grappling with the aftermath of yet another natural disaster. Last year alone, the country experienced a series of devastating floods and landslides that resulted in the loss of lives and significant damage to property, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability of communities to extreme weather events.
