UN Committee Holds Hearings On Regular Report Of Azerbaijani Commissioner For Human Rights


(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 25. On January 8, 2020,the Republic of Azerbaijan presented its 5th periodic report to theUN Committee against Torture, detailing its efforts in implementingthe "UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, orDegrading Treatment or Punishment," the Office of the Commissionerfor Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan told Trend .

Additionally, an accompanying report from the Ombudsman for thecorresponding period was also submitted to the Committee.

To deliberate on this report, Rashid Rumzade, the deputy head ofthe Ombudsman's Office and head of the National Preventive Group,along with Zaur Valimammadli, Head of the Department on Cooperationwith International and Civil Society Organizations, participated ina special meeting with the members of the UN Committee againstTorture in Geneva on April 22, 2024, in response to the officialinvitation extended to the Ombudsman.

Throughout the discussions, the committee members receivedcomprehensive details regarding the activities of the Commissionerfor Human Rights under the National Preventive Mechanism mandate,including the preventive measures implemented. It was emphasizedthat recent amendments to the Constitutional Act concerning theCommissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic ofAzerbaijan, reflecting recommendations from the committee, haveenhanced the Ombudsman's functions within the framework of theNational Preventive Mechanism.

The questions of the committee members were answered, anddiscussions were held at the meeting.
