Surge in attacks targeting refugees in Germany sparks controversy

(MENAFN) In Germany, there has been a notable surge in attacks targeting refugees, asylum seekers, and their residential facilities throughout the current year. The German government, in response to a parliamentary inquiry from the "Left" party, revealed that the police recorded a higher number of such attacks in the first nine months of this year compared to the entire preceding year.

The data disclosed that 1,515 attacks occurred during the period from January to the end of September, surpassing the total of 1,371 attacks recorded for the entire year of 2022. Notably, during the third quarter of this year, shelters experienced criminal incidents or were the subject of politically motivated attacks in 30 instances, with three of these incidents involving violent crimes. The majority of attacks on shelters, numbering 23, were attributed to right-wing circles, according to statistics obtained by the German News Agency (dpa).

Beyond attacks on residential facilities, the police also monitored 417 politically motivated crimes outside of accommodation facilities during the same period, specifically directed against asylum seekers or recognized refugees. Of these, 375 were assumed to be right-wing-motivated crimes, while 19 were associated with the phenomenon of "foreign ideology," including two classified as having left-wing motives. For some crimes, the background remained unknown. This broader category also encompassed a total of 55 violent crimes.

The escalating number of attacks on refugees and asylum seekers in Germany raises concerns about the safety and well-being of these vulnerable populations. The prevalence of such incidents underscores the need for robust measures to address and counteract xenophobia and violence directed at those seeking refuge and asylum.
