Publishing Technology firm Print Bookstore attended the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, where it demonstrated its augmented reality technology that helps people with visual disabilities.
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia--(Newsfile Corp. - May 24, 2023) - Saudi Arabia-based printing and publishing technology firm Print Bookstore has attended the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, which was held from May 22 to 28, 2023 at the Abu Dhabi National exhibition Centre.
As part of its exhibit at the internationally renowned book and literature fair, Print demonstrated the augmented reality technology that it developed for the Vuzix smart glasses, which can help people with visual disabilities read and translate text.
The technology uses the glasses' 8MP camera to capture images from signs or the pages of a book. It then uses optical character recognition (OCR) technology to convert it into text and uploads it via Wi-Fi to a cloud server to transform the text into speech, which the wearer can hear through the glasses' built-in speakers. The glasses can translate text as well as read text from either Arabic or English and convert it to English or Arabic audio.
According to Khaled Bamohamed, founder and CEO of Print Bookstore, the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair provides the company with an opportunity to demonstrate its technology, and the fair is also an excellent venue to market its publishing platform. Since the publishing platforms establishment in January 2022, it was able to be in contact with close to 1,000 authors and 100 publishers worldwide and exhibit its print-on-demand capabilities to a multitude of potential partners. Print's network spans more than 200 copy and printing centers in 35 cities across Saudi Arabia.
"Our on-demand publishing platform initially worked with publishers, where they can upload their books online, which the readers can buy and have printed for them. Once we accumulated a large number of publishers and books, we realized that we can also extend our marketing efforts to consumers, letting them choose which books they would like to have printed."
Bamohamed says attending book fairs is important for companies such as Print Bookstore, as it allows them to get directly in contact with readers, as well as publishers. This provides more direct market engagement compared to marketing campaigns on social media, which reaches a wider, but less receptive, audience.
Another reason for attending these events is to promote the company as a technology provider that creates solutions related to reading, he adds. These technologies, including the augmented reality offering, benefit from market feedback. By presenting the technology to the fair's attendees, Print Bookstore can engage with potential customers and business partners, giving it more insight on how to move forward.
"We met with a government organization for people with disabilities. We presented the technology to them, and we were able to gain a lot of information on how to improve it to benefit people that have impaired vision. They pointed out the limitations of the technology and gave us tips on how to make the technology even more fully accessible to its users. Overall, we had a great and fruitful experience at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair and we're looking forward to attending more events like this in the future," Bamohamed says.
