China's two sessions to bring in new faces, concentration of power

(MENAFN) The annual parliamentary meetings in China, known as Two Sessions, are set to commence with the opening of the 14th People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on Saturday. Thousands of delegates representing the world's most populated country is going to gather in Beijing for the legislative meetings, and experts anticipate that new faces will be introduced into the country's administration. However, some analysts warn that such a change may lead to a "concentration of power."

The 14th National People's congress (NPC), China's top lawmaking body, is going to commence proceedings a day after the CPPCC, and the "reform" of the Communist Party of China (CCP) and state institutions will be on the agenda. It is expected that Xi Jinping, who was elected for an unprecedented third term last October as chief of the CCP, is going to retain his position as the country's president at the end of the legislative meeting.

The Two Sessions come in the wake of warnings from the United States House Select Committee on CCP of an "existential struggle" with China. Committee Chairman Mike Gallagher stated at the hearing's opening that "the most fundamental freedoms are at stake" in this struggle. Guo Weimin, the spokesman for the first session of the CPPCC, announced on Friday that the meeting will begin at 3:00 p.m. local time (0700GMT) on Saturday and end on March 11.
