Doha: The Ministry of Interior (MoI)'s General Directorate of Traffic is celebrating the 35th Gulf Corporation Council (GCC) Traffic Week, March 5-11, under the theme 'Your Life is a Trust'.

General Directorate of Traffic's acting director-general Brig Mohamed Abdullah Al Shahwani said that Qatar is at the forefront of GCC countries in celebrating the Gulf Traffic Week, since Their Highnesses and Excellencies Interior Ministers of the GCC states approved it in November 1983, due to an awareness of the importance of traffic safety, and the need to raise awareness of traffic rules and laws.

He stressed that Qatar has achieved positive results when it comes to traffic safety over the past years, due to executive measures taken to that effect, making it a leader amongst Middle East countries, expressing his hope that the GCC Traffic Week meets this year's objective of maintaining the security and safety of road users.

He referred to the efforts made by the General Directorate of Traffic in maintaining road safety and upgrading the traffic culture of road users, based on executive plans for the national strategy for traffic safety, strengthening its role in traffic management, road control, and law enforcement.

Brig Al Shahwani explained that the celebration of the GCC Traffic Week is one of the occasions through which the General Directorate of Traffic seeks to shed light on traffic safety, and educate the public on the importance of concerted efforts and complementary roles in reducing the rate of traffic accidents and their consequences.

GCC Traffic Week celebrations this year will include a number of events and activities at driving schools and General Directorate of Traffic partners' locations, in coordination with a number of schools to hold a series of meetings and seminars to better inform new drivers on safe driving, Traffic Law, and the most common traffic violations.

Celebratory activities for all sectors of the general public will take place at Souq Waqif on Wednesday, with the participation of a number of the General Directorate of Traffic partners.

Additionally, the Traffic awareness department launched an awareness campaign on its social media accounts, which will continue throughout the GCC Traffic Week.
