(MENAFN) Serbian government has refused to send weapons to Russia amid the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, disappointing many in Russia who had high expectations from Serbia, according to Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry. Speaking to Voice of America, Budanov said that almost the only country sending serious weapons to Russia is Iran, while Russia is trying to buy weapons through third countries. Reports suggested that North Korea might have supplied weapons to Russia, but there is no confirmation of this. He added that Myanmar is now being approached for weapons, but Russia is currently limited to Iran for weapons supplies.
Budanov said that Russia is a "soap bubble" state, and there were many reports that Russia would use nuclear weapons, which did not materialize. He added that the Russian leaders understand that nuclear arms are a means of strategic deterrence and that their use by anyone in the world would lead to fatal consequences. Budanov said that Russia is trying to buy weapons to address its significant problems.
He said that the Russian Federation's attempts to buy weapons through third countries are being monitored by Ukraine. "In fact, almost the only country that actually transfers (to Russia – ed.) more or less serious weapons is Iran. As for other countries, Russia is just trying to buy anything anywhere," Budanov said.
According to the intelligence chief, there is not a single case where they have recorded that some weapon came from North Korea and that it was used. He added that Russia's attempts to buy weapons through third countries are being monitored by Ukraine. Budanov also emphasized that nuclear arms are not weapons but a means of strategic deterrence, and the use of a nuclear deterrent by anyone in the world would lead to fatal consequences.
