EU leaders begin meeting with moment of silence for earthquake victims


(MENAFN) At the beginning of their meeting on Thursday, the EU leaders observed a moment of quiet in memory of the earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria.

Charles Michel's spokeswoman, Barend Leyts, tweeted that the exceptional European Council had just begun with a moment of silence for the victims of the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria.

Several EU leaders expressed their sincere sorrow over the earthquake on the route to the summit.

The president of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda, expressed his sympathies to the Turkish people on behalf of his country.

"Lithuania is ready to help the nations who suffered this horrible earthquake," he informed them.

Kaja Kallas, the prime minister of Estonia, also expressed grief over the tragedy and noted that her nation had dispatched 45 rescue personnel and supplies to Turkey just two days prior.
