Hungary Blocks EU Aid To Ukraine

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Dec 6 (KUNA) -- European Union Economic and Finance Ministers Tuesday failed to agree on a 18 billion euro (USD 18.8 billion) aid package for Ukraine due to Hungary's objection during their meeting in Brussels.
'The most pressing issue today was EU financing for Ukraine in 2023. On November 9, the Commission proposed a package of 18 billion euro to help cover the country's most pressing needs and a significant part of its financing need for next year,' European Commission Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis told a press conference after the meeting.
'Since one Member State objected, we did not reach agreement today,' he added.
Earlier today, Hungarian Finance Minister Mihaly Varga said 'Hungary is not in favour of the amendment of the financial regulation.'
The aid package for Ukraine required a vote on three pieces of legislation, and Varga indicated he would not agree to the amendment to the joint financial regulation, which required unanimity, so the package as a whole could not be adopted. (end)
