QALAT (Pajhwok): The number of mad dogs has increased in southern Zabul province as at least 80 people were bitten in the past one month and two of them lost their lives, officials say.
Public health director Dr. Abdul Hakim Hakimi told Pajhwok Afghan News the number of frenzied canines had lately increased in Qalat city and some districts. During the past one month, he said 80 people were bitten by mad dogs, including adults and children.
Two of the victims died — one a resident of Mezan district and the other a resident of Khak-i-Afghan district.
He said treatment and vaccination facilities for victims of dog-bites were available in health centers of all districts, including Qalat.
Ziaul Haq Zahid, manager of urban governance in Qalat Municipality, told Pajhwok Afghan News that they had launched a campaign to eliminate mad dogs in Qalat city. The campaign would be extended to districts as well, he added.
He asked people to cooperate with the municipality and should not let loose their domestic dogs.
Residents welcomed the municipality campaign and said mad dogs bitten children and adults daily.
Nasir Ahmad, a resident of Qalat city, said the campaign to eliminate rabid dogs was important for the safety of people.
He said mad dogs had increased in Qalat and districts, threatening people's lives. He called on relevant authorities to take measures to do away with rabid dogs in districts as well.
Rabies is fatal but preventable viral disease. People if bitten by mad dog should visit the nearest health center.
