1st group of immigrants reach New Zealand from Nauru

(MENAFN) The first group of immigrants from Australia's offshore custody centers in Nauru reached Auckland, New Zealand, on Tuesday, according to local media.

A group of six immigrants arrived in Auckland under a resettlement agreement between New Zealand and Australia, as reported by SBS News.

“We confirm a flight left Nauru today destined for New Zealand with an initial six refugees on board," the broadcaster cited Australian Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil as saying.

Nauru is a small island country in Micronesia, northeast of Australia.

"The Australian and New Zealand governments continue to work together to resettle annually 150 refugees from Australia’s existing regional processing cohort,” as stated by the minister.

New Zealand will resettle 450 immigrants in the following three years.

In 2021, Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG) stopped the controversial refugees’ detention agreement.

Under its migration rule, Australia arrests refugees who reach by vessel, in processing centers on Manus and Nauru, where conditions have been labelled as terrible by rights supporters.
