Swedish man accused with terrorism in connection with murder in Gotland

(MENAFN) In July, a Swedish man was charged with "terrorism" after murdering a lady near a political event on the island of Gotland.

After fatally stabbing eminent psychiatrist Ing-Marie Wieselgren, who served as a coordinator for the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, the 33-year-old suspect was apprehended.

According to police, there were signs that the individual also intended to assassinate Centre Party leader Annie Lööf, who was on the island and has long been a target of far-right organizations.

The incident took place in broad daylight, right in the center of Almedalen, the annual political celebration.

A psychiatric evaluation ordered by the court revealed that the individual was mentally ill at the time of the murder. Before the attack, he had obtained a knife, two swords, and a bow and arrow.

Investigators claim he also had extensive information regarding Wieselgren and Lööf's plans and movements at Almedalen.

Prosecutors said the killing was intended to "create considerable alarm among the populace" in Sweden and has been classified as "terrorism."
