Thousands March in France against " grab’" of water by agriculture industry, sparking clashes

(MENAFN) Based on the organizers, thousands of protesters disobeyed a formal injunction on Saturday to march in opposition to the installation of new water storage infrastructure for agricultural irrigation in western France.

Gerald Darmanin, the interior minister, reported that 61 cops had been harmed, including 22 badly, as well as the escalation of clashes between paramilitary gendarmes and protestors, although he did not provide a breakdown of protester casualties.

The protest was organized by "Bassines Non Merci," a pressure group made up of environmental organizations, labor unions, and anti-capitalist organizations, against what it alleges is a "water grab" in western France.

The Deux-Sevres department's Sainte-Soline hamlet is now using enormous water "basins" to irrigate farms, which opponents allege distorts the availability of water during the current drought.

According to Emmanuelle Dubee, the prefect of the Deux-Sevres department, 1,500 police were mobilized because she anticipated 5,000 protesters to converge on the community of 350 people.
