Doha: Community members have lauded the country's hosting of international artworks and exhibitions for the past five months. Art shows have brought the community members together and created art appreciation on fashion, architecture, self-discovery and music, The Peninsula has learned.
Expatriates who have visited the past exhibitions that Qatar Museums (QM) held, said one thing in common — each art piece evokes awe. These exhibits include Kader Attia: On Silence, Jeff Koons: Lost in America, Virgil Abloh: Figures of Speech, and the crowd's favourite, Christian Dior Designer of Dreams.
Every year, QM presents an array of temporary special exhibitions across multiple cultural institutions and venues. All exhibits ran from November and concluded in March or April.
“The biggest impression the three exhibits [excluding On Silence] left me with was how they were all huge in scale and expansive. It took me on a journey that I, as a spectator, felt like unlocking different scenarios with each section or room that I entered,” Alex Evangelista told The Peninsula.
Jen, who has been living in Qatar for over five years, said the exhibits were a gateway to discover various form of arts at its finest,“I hope the country will host more exhibits like this in the coming months.”
Simon Owens, who visited On Silence exhibit, said:“Initially it was uncanny but as I delve deeper and toured the galleries, it was a cognisance that the portrayals are happening every day, we might not be aware of it but the exhibit speaks. And I think that is why it's called On Silence, because in silence, that is where we are truly heard.”
Among the most talked and visited exhibit is Christian Dior Designer of Dreams. Cynthia Macalino, who's been in Qatar for over two decades, said:“I am a fashion lover myself and this is like a haven for me. Qatar has been hosting international exhibits for a very long time and I believe the art and cultural scene will go bigger and bigger. There is so much the country has to offer even after the World Cup.”
Shara Lim, who's been working in the country for 14 years, expressed her amazement on the said exhibit.“Impressive, stunning, elegant, and luxurious. Every detail at Designer of Dreams is well-taught, even the elevator! It feels like I'm in a fairy-tale or wonderland.”
Fun and youthful, this is how Tin Salvador described Jeff Koons: Lost in America exhibit.“Kids enjoyed the most, especially with the orange balloon dog where people lined up to take photos.”
QM announced in March free admission for all the exhibits which was welcomed by members, The Peninsula checked on the booking of tickets where almost every day, it has been fully booked.
Community members also praised the accessibility of the exhibits which can be reached via Metro or taxi.
On Qatar hosting similar exhibits, they said the country has been doing well building its mark as a cultural hub.“Hosting more expansive exhibitions like these will further help nurture the artistic atmosphere among aspiring artists and enthusiasts,” said Alex Evangelista. Meanwhile, Tin Salvador said investments in arts and culture is crucial to promote cultural awareness and bringing communities together.
Currently, QM's ongoing exhibits are Pipilotti Rist: Your Brain To Me, My Brain To You, which is a journey on self-discovery, and a sneak peek at Qatar Auto Museum Project which explores the past, present and future of the automobile and its impact on global life and culture. Both are happening at National Museum of Qatar and will continue until December and January 2023 respectively.
