São Paulo – Eight plants of Brazilian food processor BRF were cleared to export to Iraq. Five units got new accreditations while three were renewed. Most clearances were related to chicken meat, but two units will also be able to ship turkey meat and breaded products to the country, BRF reported.

The new accreditations were given to two factories in Lajeado, Rio Grande do Sul, one in Chapecó, Santa Catarina, one in Toledo, Paraná, and Buriti Alegre, Goiás. The renewals were granted to plants in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, Serafina Corrêa, Rio Grande do Sul, and Capinzal, Santa Catarina.

According to BRF International Institutional Relations executive manager Luiz Carlos Tavares, the decisions mark the resumption of foreign in-person audit missions, which had been suspended for 26 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These accreditations show the strength of our strategy in the halal market in a moment when Iraq lifts the ban on such imports, which had been in force since September 2019,” Tavares was quoted as saying in a statement.

The halal market consists of the consumption of halal-certified products fit for Muslim consumption. According to BRF, the production in the accredited units follow the rules of the halal market, with Muslim workers and supervisors.

BRF is one of the world's leading food companies and exports to 117 countries. The company owns brands like Sadia, Perdigão and Qualy. In the Arab countries, the company owns processing units in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
