UNAMA Urges Taliban to Stop Intimidating Afghan Media Outlets
(MENAFN- Khaama Press)
United Nations Assistant Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has expressed concern over the situation of media and journalists in Afghanistan adding that the Taliban have not decreased the arbitrary arrest of Afghan journalists.
UNAMA has said that the Taliban do not allow the detained journalists and media workers to make contact outside during their time in the Taliban's custody.
The Assistant Mission has in particular mentioned Bismillah Watandost who was in the custody of the Taliban for ten days and was not allowed to make contact with his family or anyone outside.
Watandost is a local journalist in Kandahar province who was arrested by the Taliban but the motive behind the incarceration is not clear yet.
UNAMA has said that Watandost has been freed but other journalists have been taken to the Taliban's jails now.
Earlier, the Taliban arrested three journalists and media workers in Kandahar province who were then released.
It comes as Afghanistan's Independent Journalists Association has expressed concern over the spike in violations against the Afghan journalist adding that 114 cases of violations against the journalists have been recorded in the past seven months.
Censorship, restrictions, and access to information are other issues from which the Afghan journalists suffer the most.
