Fahrettin Altun: Europe can learn from Turkey on how to deal with emigrant disaster

(MENAFN) According to Turkey’s Communications Director Fahrettin Altun, Europe can learn from Turkey how to humanely deal with the emigrant emergency caused by the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

Fahrettin Altun stated in a guest op-ed for Al Jazeera English online "As it contemplates how to handle this humanitarian crisis, Europe can turn to Turkey for some lessons. After all, Turkey has been handling refugee waves from the Middle East efficiently and humanely for many years, while most European nations were inflicting additional suffering on vulnerable victims of conflict with their 'security-first' asylum policies."

In the piece, called “What Turkey can teach Europe about handling a refugee crisis,” Altun emphasized that Turkey always treated the emigrants it welcomes with "humanity and respect."

Altun added “Unlike in Europe, where many politicians routinely resort to anti-immigration rhetoric for quick political gain, the Turkish leadership consistently resisted attempts by the domestic opposition to stoke anti-refugee sentiment in the country.”

He went on that emigrants, despite where they come from, discovered a “true haven in Turkey,” noting “The Turkish government refused to scapegoat refugees in the wake of terror attacks.”
