Qatar renews commitment to cut emissions, achieve QNV goals

Doha: On the occasion of Qatar Environment Day 2022, being observed today, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has renewed its commitment to achieving environmental and sustainable development goals envisioned under the Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030.

“Qatar is determined to achieve its environmental sustainable development goals, giving priority to those set up by Qatar National Environment and Climate Change Strategy (QNE),” said Minister of Environment and Climate Change H E Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali Al Thani.

In a statement on the occasion of Qatar Environment Day, the Ministry said the priorities set in QNE include cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, improving air quality, protecting biodiversity for healthy and resilient natural ecosystems, rationalising water consumption, and building infrastructure for circular economy and waste management.

The Minister of Environment and Climate led a number of activities yesterday such as releasing a group of Al Reem deer and planting wild trees in the Sealine Reserve. The activities were organised by the Ministry in collaboration with Qatar Scouts and Guides Association and Friends of the Environment Center.

The Ministry is also holding a series of activities this week to mark the day.

The activities are part of the Ministry's ongoing efforts which aim at protecting biodiversity and increasing greenery in the country. The 'Plant Million Tree' and 'Conservation of Hawksbill Turtle' initiatives are among the most successful environment projects of the Ministry. So far, over half-a- million trees have been planted and over 35,000 baby turtles released in the sea over past five years.

“The slogan of Qatar Environment Day 2022 'Our Environment - Our Responsibility' aims at establishing a strong relation between the community and environment,” said the Minister.

He said protecting the environment is an integral part of Qatari tradition and social responsibility which aims to preserve natural resources and eco-system. The Minister reiterated the keenness to exert more efforts to protect the environment and achieve sustainable development goals, which represent the ministry's strategy in protecting the environment and mitigating impact of climate change. 

“Qatar, under the wise leadership of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, is keen to protect the environment and to ensure natural balance, achieving comprehensive and sustainable development for all generations,” said the Minister.

He said environmentally-sustainable development is one of the key pillars of QNV 2030, and achieving it is a national responsibility.

He said Qatar is at the forefront of countries that have announced their plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions seriously and effectively.

The Minister said that the day is an important occasion to draw attention to major environmental issues in the country and raising awareness among community members and influencing their behaviour towards preserving the environment.

The Ministry is organising a series of activities and events to spread environmental awareness and knowledge and consolidate the values and behaviours of environmental protection in order to achieve sustainability and preserve biodiversity.

He said the activities include afforestation campaigns, release of animals and birds in natural reserves, cleaning drives and cultivation of endangered wild plants in meadows. The Minister said that activities are also being held in schools for raise awareness among young students as they play important role in achieving sustainable development and preserving the environment.
