The Ambassador of Japan to Qatar H E Satoshi Maeda has said there is no set date for Japan to reopen its borders to foreign nationals travelling for tourism. Japan has been closed to non-residents for almost two years.
In a press conference held recently, the Ambassador said:“When the COVID-19 situation settles down and the issuance of tourist visas resumes, we look forward to welcoming you to Japan. We have been receiving inquiries from Qataris regarding travel to Japan, so the Embassy will continue to work with them.
“It's still unclear due to the outbreak of the Omicron variant, though new infections of the variant in Japan have now subsided. However, the increase in the number of people infected with the virus in Japan is showing signs of calming down, and border measures are being reviewed in the direction of relaxation.”
He added,“We will continue to promote the charms of Japan with an eye to expanding exchanges with Qataris after the situations related to COVID-19 are better.”
In a recent development, starting in March, Japan will ease its strict border policies to foreign nationals but only limited to foreign students and business travellers. The quarantine period will also be shortened to three days from the current seven days, with no requirement for such in some cases.
The daily cap on the number of people allowed to enter Japan will be raised from 3,500 to 5,000.
Visa requirement for a Qatari national intending to visit are based on two options, one for tourist and for business. Under the tourist visa, the requirements include original passport, one passport copy, visa application form, one photo taken within three months, and one copy of flight booking (entire trip).
For business, the procedure is similar as the requirements for tourist visa plus the original cover letter from an employer in Qatar or employee certificate (written within one month), hotel reservation for the period of stay, and original letter of reason for invitation, original letter of guarantee, and schedule of stay in Japan.
Meanwhile, foreign residents in Qatar can avail four types of visas, including tourists, visiting relatives, visiting acquaintances (friends), and for business.
