Amman, Jan. 24 (Petra) -- A sharp drop in temperatures is expected on Monday, bringing extremely cold weather with cloudy skies and rainfall in the northern, central and parts of the southwestern regions, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said in its daily update.
During the early hours, light flurries of rain-mixed snow will fall over the highlands, but with no accumulation, while winds will be westerly moderate, the JMD added.
In its report, the JMD warned of the danger of frost formation in the early morning and late night hours, especially over the highlands. It also warned of slippery roads in the areas witnessing rainfall, and of low horizontal visibility in the mountainous areas due to the formation of fog and low clouds.
Weather conditions will stabilize on Tuesday as mercury levels slightly increase, with clouds at low altitudes and southeasterly to southwesterly moderate winds.
On Wednesday, a new depression accompanied by a polar front is expected to bring biting cold weather with rainfall in the northern regions, gradually extending to all parts of the country. The downpour will be heavy at times, with thunderstorms and hail, causing flash floods in the valleys and low-lying areas.
The JMD did not rule out the possibility of snowfall in the mountainous regions, particularly in the northern and southern range and areas located 800m above sea level.
Today, the maximum and minimum temperatures in eastern Amman will range from 7 Celsius degrees to 0C during night, while highs in western Amman will be 5C and lows at -1C. The Gulf of Aqaba will see a fair 15C, dropping to 5C at night hours.
