Afghanistan - Rights situation has become better, claim Taliban

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Taliban have rejected claims the Human Rights Watch (HRW) has made in its latest report on the situation in Afghanistan.

In fact, the Islamic Emirate said, the human rights situation in the war-devastated country had become better.

Bilal Karimi, deputy spokesman for the Taliban, tweeted:“We deny it because since the Islamic Emirate swept into power, the rights of women have been maintained.”

He insisted such reports were based on“false information”. Karimi said the group recognised the rights of all Afghans in line with the Sharia law.

Released on Thursday, the HRW report alleged the political change had accelerated human rights crises and humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan.

Restrictions were imposed on women's right to work and girls' right to education in the wake of the political change in mid-August 2021.

Curbs on media and journalists had led to self-censorship and the closure of many news outlets in the country, the report added.

In the 753-page report, HRW characterised the current human rights situation in Afghanistan as a“crisis”.
