Jordan - Safadi takes part in Paris International Conference for Libya


(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN — Deputising for his majesty King Abdullah, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Friday participated in the Paris International conference for Libya.

The conference was hosted by French President Emmanuel macron withthe federal Chancellor of Germany, the President of the Italian Council of Ministers, the President of the Interim Presidency Council of Libya, the Prime Minister of the Interim government of National Unity of Libya, and the Secretary General of the United Nations.

The event saw the participation of high-level representatives of countries and international organisations concerned with the Libyan issue.

Safadi, during the event, said that the conference is an important step in solving the Libya crisis.

He stressed that there is an opportunity to realise a solution, essential for the security of Libya and the entire region, according to a ministry statement.

The mechanism to reach this solution can be realised through the UN Security Council resolutions, including resolutions 2570 and 2571, the outcomes of the second Berlin Conference, as well as other conferences held in Al Skheirat, Cairo and other locations, the minister added.

He stressed that the solution must bedecided on by Libyans alone, noting that national reconciliation, peace and security in Libya can only be realised through a process lead and implemented by Libyans themselves.

Safadi reiterated that the Kingdom stands with Libyans as they move forward to reach this solution, especially in the procedures to hold the presidential and parliamentary elections on December 24.

The minister also praised the efforts of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) and its achievements in reaching the ceasefire agreed upon in 2020.

He concluded his speech by expressing confidence in Libyans' ability to reach the solution, adding that Libyans enjoy all the necessary elements to build a future free of conflict and full of opportunities for their compatriots.

The conference issued a communiqué, where attendees stressed their commitment to supporting Libya's political process until a solution is reached to end the crisis and realise a better future for Libyans.

The communiqué also recommended several steps that Libyan institutions should implement to push the peace process forward, restore security, improve living conditions and maintain Libyan peoples' resources.

On the sidelines of his participation in the conference, Safadi met with the foreign ministers of Egypt, Morocco, Kuwait, Algeria, Russia, Switzerland and the Netherlands, in addition to the Emirate minister of state for foreign affairs and the secretary general of the Arab league over means to enhance bilateral ties with their respective countries and the latest regional developments.

The talks also addressed the preparations to hold the international conference to support UNRWA, which is scheduled to be co-chaired by Jordan and Sweden on Tuesday in Brussels to mobilise political and financial support to the agency in its five areas, according to its UN mandate.

Safadi also held a meeting with French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian over means to boost bilateral ties, regional developments and efforts to reach solutions to regional crises.

He also met with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell over means to enhance relations between the Kingdom and the EU, and preparations to hold the Jordanian-European partnership council over the next months.

Also on Friday, on the sidelines of the conference, Safadi met Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan over means to develop bilateral ties and enhance cooperation and coordination over regional issues. He highlighted the need to boost joint Arab action to overcome shared challenges and serve Arab causes.
