Higher education sector ready for new academic year


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: Assistant Undersecretary for Higher Education Affairs at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Dr. Khalid Al Ali underlined that the Ministry has taken all necessary measures to support higher education institutions in order to achieve a successful and fruitful academic year, while adhering to all precautionary measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of the preparations of the Higher Education Affairs Sector for the 2021-22 academic year, higher education institutions in the State of Qatar were directed to adopt the blended learning system for the first semester - fall of the 2021-22 academic year. Meanwhile, the attendance rate in academic programmes that require teaching in campus should not exceed 50% until further notice.

The Higher Education Affairs Sector also sent circulars to higher education institutions for guidance to ensure the smooth integration of students in the new academic year and maintain their safety. The Higher Education Affairs Sector facilitates all necessary arrangements and procedures to enable students to complete higher education by providing various privileges such as government scholarships, scholarships and others.

The State encourages the private sector to invest in the higher education sector through a number of special laws, and has approved the establishment, equipment and development of universities. The number of universities in the State of Qatar reached 32 universities in 2020, compared to 16 universities in 2014. More than 39,000 students enrolled in those universities during the 2019-20 academic year.

Higher education institutions in the State of Qatar offer 366 educational programmes for the academic year 2020-21, with Qatar University, the Community College, College of the College of North Atlantic and Hamad Bin Khalifa University providing more than 57% of these programmes.

Higher education institutions in the State of Qatar are divided into 10 public institutions offering 206 academic programmes, 5 military institutions offering 19 academic programmes, 8 institutions affiliated to Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development offering 69 academic programmes, and 9 higher education institutions affiliated to the private sector offering 72 academic programmes.
