U.S. president says U.S. to conclude fight duty in Iraq by end of 2021

(MENAFN) On Monday, Jul. 26 President Joe Biden stated that the U.S. military will conclude its fight duty in Iraq by the end of 2021.

Biden noted at the Oval Office with visiting Iraq’s Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi: "our role in Iraq will be to ... continue to train, to assist, to help and to deal with ISIS (Islamic State) as it arises, but we're not going to be, by the end of the year, in a combat mission."

He stated: "our counter-terrorism cooperation will continue even as we shift to this new phase."

There are currently about 2,500 U.S. troops in Iraq. U.S.-led coalition forces have been set up in Iraq to back the Iraqi forces in the fight against the Islamic State, mostly offering training and advising to the Iraqi forces.
