KABUL: Afghanistan's armed forces have repelled a full-blown Taliban attack on a key district in northern Samangan province and killed a handful of insurgents and foiling their longstanding plan to capture the district centre.

District Chief Haji Fazlullah on Saturday said Taliban insurgents had staged a full-scale dawn attack from all fronts on Feroz Nakhchir district, but they met with counterassault of Afghan security forces. in which two militants were killed and their attack was pushed back.

He said government troops had killed several rebel fighters in clashes, thwarting the rebels'' latest effort to take over the district.

A policeman was killed during the clashes, he said, adding that 2 civilians were killed in Labe Aab area after insurgents began firing with heavy artillery.

A resident of that area said on condition of anonymity that both sides had suffered casualties in the clashes that ensued.

Samangan has been an insecure province in northern Afghanistan since years and Taliban are strongly operating in many of its districts and villages.
