Afghanistan- Khalilzad to Stay as US Special Envoy for Now

(MENAFN- Daily Outlook Afghanistan) KABUL - The new US government would retain Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad as its envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation for the time being, CNN reported on Saturday.
An incoming administration traditionally replaces politically appointed officials with its own team, particularly on significant foreign policy matters.
The move is reflective of the Biden administration's commitment to honouring the US-Taliban peace deal until its review by the new team, the media outlet said.
On the diplomatic assignment for more than two years, Khalilzad's talks with the Taliban yielded the peace agreement, which was inked last year.
Widely known for his diplomatic skills, Khalilzad has been US ambassador to Afghanistan, Iraq and the United Nations. (Pajhwok)
