Amid winter shortages, Uzbekistan imports electricity from adjunct nations

(MENAFN) In the midst of winter power deficits, Uzbekistan has imported electricity from surrounding nations to cover domestic demand, the Uzbek Energy Ministry said Wednesday.

The ministry said, "In order not to disrupt domestic supply, Uzbekistan has been importing electricity from other neighboring countries," adding that a part of the imports will be re-exported to Afghanistan.

Uzbekistan, under an intergovernmental agreement between the two nations, exports 2,2 million megawatts of electricity annually to Afghanistan, it said.

Since the only country in the region linking Afghanistan to the Central Asian Power Grid, Uzbekistan shares a short southern border with Afghanistan, and has been involved in the country's socio-economic revival and regional infrastructure projects, including the construction of railways and power lines.
