Malawi leader announces state of nationwide disaster amidst rise in coronavirus cases


(MENAFN) A state of nationwide disaster in all Malawi's 28 districts has been announced by Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera as coronavirus reveals itself on Malawians with more than 2,000 new infections registered and 50 people as a minimum dead since Jan. 1.

Following the death of two of the president's cabinet ministers early on Tuesday because of coronavirus, Malawi leader made the announcement on Tuesday in a special address to the people.

Chakwera noted: "I declare a state of national disaster in respect of all the districts in the country with effect from today, January 12, 2021."

He stated: "I, therefore, appeal for more assistance from the international community, relevant UN agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector, for uncommon contributions towards the resources needed to meet the present challenge of the pandemic."
