LANDIKOTAL: District Police Officer (DPO) of Khyber tribal district Dr Muhammad Iqbal has issued instructions to all the station house officers (SHOs) to enhance checking at all the entry and exit points of the district.

The DPO said all the security arrangements have been finalised for the upcoming polio vaccination campaign in Khyber district during which children below the age of five years will be administered vaccine. Besides the patrolling party, about 1,200 policemen will accompany the vaccination teams during their door to door campaign. He urged the parents, Ulema, political parties and other people to cooperate with the vaccination teams and security personnel for completing the campaign in a smooth manner.

Dr Muhammad Iqbal said police also expects full cooperation from the people of Khyber district for curbing the spread of coronavirus. He urged the people to abide by the government restrictions in bazaars and markets, because it is imperative for safety of everyone and that must be the paramount objective.

The DPO said police must be informed immediately if people notice any suspect activity or item in their surroundings. He said establishment of durable peace is not possible without the cooperation of police. He said the citizens should act responsibly and cooperate with police in its steps for ensuring peaceful environment.

While there is no cure for polio, vaccination is the most effective way to protect children from the crippling disease. With each vaccination of children below the age of five years, their protection against the virus is increased. No vaccination means more vulnerability to the virus particularly in Pakistan where it is endemic.

Currently, Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries in the world which have not fully eradicated polio. The main causes behind the emergence of so many polio cases are refusal of parents to cooperate with the vaccination teams and threats from militants to attack the vaccination teams. According to media reports citing Health Ministry data, over a million parents refused to cooperate with vaccination teams in 2019.

This year's vaccination campaigns were marred by coronavirus, however, the children who got the vaccination in earlier campaigns showed enough resistance and polio did not spread during the corona situation.
