Seventy-six people die due to yellow fever in Nigeria


(MENAFN) Local health officials said Friday that a yellow fever epidemic claimed a total of 76 lives in three Nigerian states over the first 10 days of November.

The official Nigerian News Agency quoted Chikwe Ihekweazu, director-general of the Nigeria Center for Disease Control as saying that Bauchi State reported eight deaths, Enugu State registered 33 deaths, whereas Delta state hold the lion's share with 35 fatalities during the stated period.

According to Ihekweazu, about 222 suspected cases and 19 confirmed cases were also reported from the three states during the period.

He noted that the majority of cases were men between the ages of 1 and 55 with symptoms ranging from fever, headache, fatigue, jaundice, abdominal pain, epistaxis, feces or urine vomiting to blood.
